Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) problems: Logitech Media Server died. Restarting.

Hi

I've been happily running LMS on my Ubuntu box (13.10). Trying the new
14.04, I'm seeing the old favourite message 'Logitech Media Server died.
Restarting.'. Does anyone have it running successfully on 14.04? My
searches of the forum and Google didn't yield anything of use.

Cheers
Martin

Most likely an unsupported perl. What version string would you get with
perl -v? What LMS version are you running?

Not yet running LMS on 14.04, but I do have a machine running 14.04. The
output of perl -v is:

This is perl 5, version 18, subversion 2 (v5.18.2) built for x86_64-linux-gnu-

Yeah, that's still missing from 7.7. But LMS 7.8 should be fine. Please
give it a try.

Thanks for the idea. Am I correct in taking 7.8 from here:

Just tried running it from /usr/sbin/squeezeboxserver , and I get this

I am able to run 14.04 and LMS 7.8 with a normal deb install (I did no
manual compiling), My version of 14.04 is dated Feb 27th when beta 1
freeze ocurred and I have made no special modiifications other than
installing Cinnamon DE. The software update is calling for a 220 MB
upgrade but I don't want to try it as it will take forever to install on
my USB stick so I don't have the latest version of 14.04

Installed 14.04 latest nightly build. Downloaded latest 7.8.0 LMS build.
Installed it. Done. Working flawlessly.

Please note that LMS 7.8 currently requires you to run Ubuntu (or
whatever other Perl 5.18 based Linux in x86_64 mode. 32-bit mode
currently is not supported.

Is your machine 32 bit or did you install 32-bit on your otherwise
64-bit capable machine?

You could most likely build all dependencies yourself... but it can be a
bit involved....

Hi Michael,

When I first installed kubuntu we were advised to install the 32bit
version. My machine is intel core2 so I will try a live install of
kubuntu 14.04 when it's released and reinstall all my data.....I hate
doing this but it's going to have to be done sometime. I might as well
start now. I've looked at an update to the kernel then reinstalling 64
bit and that task would probably be beyond my abilities. My main server
is on 12.04 LTS so that can stay there for a while...

Thanks for the information.

Mike.

Once again, Michael saves the day! I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 x64 today
as a VM, replacing my 12.04 x64 VM. After installing LMS via apt and
getting the dreaded "restarting" message, I found this thread.

I've downloaded 7.8 from
http://downloads.slimdevices.com/LogitechMediaServer_v7.8.0/, installed
it, and all is working.

Thank you Michael. I know that logitech has stopped the LMS products but
lots of us have many slim players and would be lost without them, and
with your time and hard work we can continue to enjoy them.

A big thank you from me.

is to clone https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver-vendor/ and run

Thanks Michael,
OK so I cloned https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver-vendor/
(http://machiine.com/2013/pulling-a-git-repo-from-github-to-your-ubuntu-server/)
cd into https://github.com/Logitech/slimserver-vendor/ and run
CPAN/buildme.sh.
Do I need any build variables after run buildme.sh ?
and can I use the latest 7.9 logitechmediaserver build then run
buildme.sh ?

Make sure you have libgif installed on your system.

over the weekend, i will migrate my current virtual machine
12.04+LMS7.7.3 (i run it off Windows VMware Workstation) to 1.404 to
future proof my SB infrastructure for many more years :) this thread has
probably armed me with the tools to do so easily. i love running LMS on
a dedicated VM on my home server, by the way. Allows me to switch it
between machines, upgrades and always go back to a configuration that
works. And will stay now running semi-supported for many years with
14.04 LMS. long live the SB! :)

PS: I have calculated that to migrate (not upgrade) what i have to Sonos
I'd have to spend over $3k. for *no* gain in sound quality. so i am
*happy* we can keep pushing the life expectancy of a concept i prefer
anyhow :) on occasions like this, Logitech's decision still amazes me
:-P
